What is

Body Oriented Group Therapy

It is a therapy group suited to anyone but particularly beneficial for those with anxiety, depression, stress or past trauma. It is a therapy group which combines the traditional benefits of being taught about mental health by a psychologist with the additional benefits of learning how to care for the body and practice body based techniques for reducing tension in the body and regulating the nervous system.

Why Group Therapy?

The group setting allows you to learn alongside other individuals. It creates a less intense experience that individual therapy while still providing the opportunity to share your experiences and receive feedback from a psychologist and the group. It also creates a supportive space in which you can recognise the ways in which other people's experiences are similar to your own and that you are not alone in being impacted by the myriad of stressors that life inevitably brings. 

What will I learn?

  • Learn movement and breathing techniques for nervous system regulation.

  • Learn the principles of mindfulness as applied to the body.

  • Learn about anxiety, stress and depression.

  • Learn about the connections between the body, emotions and trauma.

FAQ's

Is the group physically demanding? No, it is not a yoga or exercise group. You will learn some gentle stretches' to help with mindfulness of the body and to promote relaxation but you do not need to be fit or flexible. The group does involve sitting and lying down on yoga mats, with special cushions called bolsters available for added comfort.

What to bring/ wear? Bring a water bottle. Wear loose comfortable clothing suitable for warm temperatures and gentle stretching. The room is heated to promote muscle relaxation. If possible please bring a yoga mat.
